Greek and Byzantine Studies

Within the framework of Greek and Byzantine Studies texts written in Greek from about 700 BCE up until the 15th century are studied. Methodologically, a number of specializations are represented in Uppsala, such as textual criticism, literary studies, language history and codicology. Within Byzantine Studies there are also crossdisciplinary subjects such as art history, cultural history and reception studies, all of which form important complements to the discipline of Greek as a whole.

Research projects in Greek and Byzantine Studies

Ongoing textual critical projects span over a long time period, from imperial and late antique times down to Middle- and Late Byzantine times. Work in progress includes new methods for digital textual critical publication and cataloguing medieval manuscripts. The same kind of disciplinary width is on display in literary and linguistic studies, where research is being carried out on antique, late antique, and Byzantine material. Some projects focus on reception-esthetic aspects of antique or Byzantine material, while others border on the history of culture or the history of ideas.

Larger works within the subject are published in the series Studia Graeca Upsaliensia and Studia Byzantina Upsaliensia.
